New York City has the largest Chinese population of any city outside of Asia. Thanks to the funding from the FDNY Foundation, the Phoenix Society is able to provide free Mandarin language course to uniformed and civilian personnel, as part of our mission in bridging the Department and its surrounding communities.
Based on the success of our current program, we would also like for the class to become a credit base course, in affiliation with CUNY. This will allow Department members to use the credits towards their educational advancement as part of their efforts to pursue promotional opportunities here at the FDNY, while being exposed to new cultures, diversity and a new way to effectively communicate with the public during community relations. We hope to continue the Chinese class and expand to include other Asian & Pacific-Islander languages as well.
